摘要
Retail activity is concentrated in New Zealand's handful of major cities, reflecting the country's high degree of urbanisation; less than 15% of the population lives in rural areas. Auckland alone is home to more than 36% of the country's retail outlets.
New Zealand's population is ageing: those aged 65 and over will account for nearly 16% of the population by 2019, compared with an estimated 14.3% in 2014. While companies will increasingly target older consumers, the shrinking share of young consumers and the country's small population makes it a low-priority market for foreign retailers.
Gains in retail spending over 2012 and 2013 reflect in part a strong pick-up in consumer confidence. However, consumer sentiment has retreated from its cyclical high since early 2014, suggesting that spending growth will moderate.
