Peru still has a relatively shallow financial system, but the sector has increased in importance in recent years. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the financial system to continue to grow robustly over the forecast period, on the basis of sustained economic growth and rising incomes.
Peru's financial industry-including banking, insurance and pension provision-accounted for an estimated 3.8% of GDP in 2013, according to the national statistical institute. Of this, financial services such as banking generated 3.2% of GDP, while insurance and pensions contributed just 0.6%.
Total financial sector assets stood at 167.8% of GDP in 2013, the sixth-largest among the seven largest Latin American economies, just ahead of Colombia on 165%. Increased levels of bank usage, healthy credit growth, and developments in capital markets and insurance services will support growth in the total assets/GDP ratio, bringing it to 223.2% by 2019.
