摘要
As China's rate of economic growth decelerates, many retailers are slowing the pace of store openings and are restructuring existing operations with a greater focus on profitability. According to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association (CCFA), the increase in outlet numbers among the top 100 chains in 2013, at 6,600, was the lowest on record. The top two chains-locally based Suning and Gome-both saw a net reduction in store numbers.
Nevertheless, compelling opportunities will continue to attract retailers to the market. Although retail-sales growth is expected to slow in the forecast period, it will still remain rapid by international standards. Increasing wages, progress in urbanisation and reform of the kukou (household-registration) system will help to boost consumption. Meanwhile, the fragmented nature of the market offers opportunities for consolidation.
A campaign against corruption and extravagance among government officials has had a more lasting impact than was widely anticipated on sales of many luxury items. However, Chinese demand will continue to drive growth in global sales of luxury goods in 2014-18. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that the number of households with incomes above US$150,000 a year will rise from 226,000 in 2012 to over 900,000 by 2018.
