The ruling coalition, composed of the Socialist Party of Albania (SPA) of the prime minister, Edi Rama, and the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI), has a sizeable majority, controlling 83 out of the 140 seats in parliament.
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects that, with the acceleration of reforms, Albania will receive in 2016 a date for the opening of EU accession talks, but the talks are not likely to begin that year.
We forecast that the current-account deficit will narrow to 11.5% of GDP in 2015, from an estimated 12.1% of GDP in 2014, because of lower world oil prices, before it expands to 12.7% of GDP in 2016 as import demand picks up.
