The prime minister, Hun Sen, and the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) will remain in power until 2018, but the July 2013 election showed that the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) is increasingly popular.
We expect real GDP growth to rise to 7.1% in 2015, from a revised estimate of 6.8% in 2014, owing to improved political stability. In 2016-19 growth will average a healthier 7.6%, driven by fester private consumption growth.
The current-account deficit will narrow as a proportion of GDP in 2015-19 but will remain large, at 9.3% on average. Inflows of loans and foreign direct investment will ensure that Cambodia avoids external financing difficulties.
