Lithuania will adopt the euro in January 2015. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the economy to stay competitive and, despite worsening external conditions, avoid major macroeconomic imbalances in the medium term.
The budget deficit narrowed to 2.2% of GDP in 2013. In 2014 we forecast a shortfall of 1.9%, narrowing to 1.8% in 2015 and 1% by 2018.
The current-account deficit will widen during the forecast period owing to an expansion in the goods shortfall. At 1.7% in 2014, and an average of 1.6% of GDP in 2015-18, the deficit will, however, remain well within the 2006-08 level.
