The president, Juan Orlando Hernandez of the ruling Partido Nacional, will face a more fractious legislative outlook as a new multi-party political landscape takes shape. His party will require alliances to achieve a majority.
After hitting a record high of 7.9% of GDP in 2013, the fiscal deficit will gradually fall, to 3.1% of GDP by 2019. However, fiscal consolidation will constrain efforts to promote growth.
The current-account deficit will be largely determined by trends in global commodities prices, but will gradually fall, to 6.6% of GDP by 2019, as a result of a more competitive exchange rate and higher export revenue.
