Brazil is a growing market for mobile telephony and, with more than 277m subscribers as of August 2014, is now the world's fifth-largest market (behind China, the US, Japan and Russia). Mobile penetration rates (at 137% in 2013) are above emerging-market averages and are forecast to rise above 155% by 2018. Owing to high calling costs, consumers have multiple phones to access cheaper calls within the four main networks, and individual-user penetration rates are lower (83%). This is also boosting sales of mobile units with multiple SIM-card capacity.
GDP growth of 2-3% over the medium term, together with the development of technology and adoption by consumers and companies, will increase annual mobile revenue to around US$40bn by 2018. This will be driven by a tripling of revenue from mobile-data services and the expansion of broadband Internet access.
