As in other west European countries, population ageing, expensive new technologies and a more demanding public are putting increasing pressure on healthcare in the Netherlands. The Dutch healthcare system is successful in providing widespread coverage, but is struggling to contain cost growth.
The government's fiscal consolidation strategy will preclude high state healthcare spending in 2014-18. The government will continue to look for ways to curb cost growth, such as raising the co-payment burden on patients.
