Total expenditure (public and private) on healthcare reached around 6% of GDP in 2013, lower than the average of about 7% in the new EU members, and the lowest share of any EU state.
Expenditure on healthcare peaked in 2008 and fell during the economic crisis of 2009-10, creating a gap between supply and demand. Government expenditure on healthcare (including the payment of arrears to the pharmaceutical sector) surged by nearly 20% in 2013, but should level out in 2014.
