The left-wing government of the ruling Frente Farabundo Marti para la liberation National (FMLN), led by Salvador Sanchez Ceren, will guarantee some degree of policy continuity, despite the president's hardline credentials.
The new government will be forced to impose fiscal consolidation measures in order to bring down the deficit, which was 3.6% of GDP in 2014, and to renew an expired IMF agreement.
The current-account deficit is forecast to narrow to 4.6% by 2015-16, driven by low oil prices, but will then widen back to 4.8% by 2018. The government will make efforts to increase the country's export potential.
