摘要
Chile has the most sophisticated retail sector in Latin America, as well as one of the more developed e-commerce markets. Leading retailers have expanded aggressively into neighbouring countries, including Argentina and Brazil. Chile's wide network of free-trade agreements (FTAs), including those with large economies such as the US, Japan and China, has opened most of its markets to foreign participation and kept the cost of imported goods low.
Chile is a relatively small market, with an estimated population of 17.6m in 2013, but consumer expenditure per head is high by regional standards, at US$10,105, above most other large Latin American economies. Nevertheless, this relative affluence is accompanied by high levels of income and geographical inequality, which has prevented consumer demand from reaching its full potential.
Chile's advantages lie in its large and profitable domestic retailers, as well as its food and food-processing industry, much of which is geared towards export. However, the Chilean consumer market is dependent on imports in key segments, notably consumer electronics, clothing and footwear, and certain household goods.
