摘要
The US is the largest national retail market in the world, with estimated retail sales in 2013 of US$3.6trn (according to The Economist Intelligence Unit's measure). The US is forecast to retain its leading position until 2018, when it will be overtaken by China.
According to the US Department of Labor, one in five businesses is a retailer and, based on payroll statistics, there were 154m employees in the retail sector in October 2014, down by 190,000 from the peak at the end of 2007.
Market concentration in the US is low and grocery retailing is largely regional. Even WalMart, the world's largest retailer, has less than a 10% market share.
The share of consumer expenditure on food is the lowest in the world, reflecting high incomes relative to most other countries, large domestic production and low prices.
