摘要
India is the world's second-largest mobile market, but it is also crowded and debt-laden. Most telecommunications companies are burdened by large investments and strained margins and profits, increasing the scope for consolidation within the sector over the forecast period. Once a showpiece of India's services sector, the telecoms industry has been damaged by a corruption scandal, an ongoing tax dispute with a UK-based company, Vodafone, and a perception that the previous, Indian National Congress-led government sought exorbitant fees from telecoms companies.
The new Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administration takes office following the success of the spectrum auction held in February under the previous government. In the wake of corruption allegations and two failed auctions, reserve prices in the last auction were lowered substantially, contributing to its success.
