The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth in the UAE's energy consumption in 2014-20 to average about 5.3% a year, outstripping annual GDP growth of about 4.4%. Energy consumption will rise from 72.7m tonnes oil equivalent (toe) in 2013 to just over 104m toe in 2020.
Growth in consumption is driven by heavily subsidised domestic prices and population growth, as well as by the federation's hot climate, and the consequent substantial use of air conditioners. The household sector is the biggest consumer of electricity.
Non-fossil fuels, including renewable and nuclear energy, are being pursued; the UAE is the most advanced of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) states in its plans to develop nuclear energy.
