The US is a significant producer, consumer and net importer of energy. However, it lost its place as the world's largest consumer of energy to China in 2009. Worldwide, at end-2013, it ranked in tenth place in terms of its oil reserves, in fifth place for natural gas and in first place for coal, according to BP's Statistical Review of World Energy 2014.
Production of shale gas and shale oil has ramped up much fester than expected, and the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that the US will be the world's largest oil producer by 2015 (counting crude oil and natural gas liquids).
