摘要

Chile has limited hydrocarbons sources and depends on imports for much of its energy consumption, o f which 78% was accounted for by oil, coal and gas in 2013. Imports of fuel and related products reached US$i5.ibn, 20.2% of total imports, that year. Such a high reliance on imports subjects Chile to the risk of global price volatility and supply shocks, as well as high costs for end-users. Energy costs are by far the highest in the Americas and are amongthe steepest globally.
Energy consumption per head-estimated at 2.2 kilotonnes oil equivalent (ktoe) per person in 2014-is the third-highest (tied with Argentina) in Latin America, behind that of Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela, but it is low by OECD standards. Despite lower automotive penetration than in regional markets such as Argentina and Mexico, energy usage is pushed up by energy-intensive industries, such as mining and cellulose production.
Energy policy emphasises building self-sufficiency, which became more critical after Argentina cut natural-gas exports in 2004 to compensate for domestic shortages. Coal consumption is thus expected to gain a larger share of the energy mix during the forecast period (2015-20), at the expense of oil and natural gas. The government has rejected nuclear power as an alternative source of energy.
