Pakistan's financial services sector is expected to grow quickly in the next five years, from a low base. This will see the industry resume the rapid expansion that it enjoyed in 2003-08-a boom that was cut short by restricted access to financing and a steep decline in asset prices during the 2008-09 global financial crisis.
Pakistan's financial sector will continue to be dominated by commercial banks, which hold 95% of the assets of the financial system. However, the country has a variety of other financial institutions, including an active stockmarket, established institutional investors, investment banks, Islamic-banking institutions, mutual funds, an insurance industry, leasing firms and a housing-finance system.
