A new telecommunications law was approved by parliament in early May 2014. The law aims to simplify administration, enhance competition and incentivise the development of further infrastructure for superfast fibre and fourth-generation (4G) networks.
Brazil is a particular focus for Telefonica. In September 2014 the company acquired GVT from Vivendi, and in late October it was reported to be planning a joint bid for TIM, Brazil's second-largest mobile operator, which is currently majority-owned by Telecom Italia.
