The expansion of mobile-phone use in Ireland has been dramatic, as it has been in most countries. The mobile-phone penetration rate reached a peak of 121.6% in 2011, from 56% in 2000. But in 2012-13 it declined slightly, felling to 117.4%, reflecting the impact of the economic and financial crisis triggered by the bursting of a property market bubble. The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that a recovery took hold in 2014 as business and consumer sentiment improved and economic activity rebounded. We expect moderate growth to continue during the forecast period to 2019, when we expect the penetration rate to reach 125.5%.
