摘要
The automotive industry accounted for 4.9% of Australia's manufacturing activity in fiscal year 2012/13 (July to June, latest available data), contributing about 04% of GDP. The country's vehicle manufacturers have typically exported about 40% of their output, although the strength of the Australian dollar over the past three years has undermined their competitive advantage.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), 47,242 people were employed by the motor vehicle and parts manufacturing sector in June 2013. Vehicle manufacturing employment is declining following announcements by all three local passenger-car producers (Toyota of Japan, General Motors and Ford, both of the US) of plans to cease manufacturing in Australia. The lack of economies of scale, a shift in consumer preferences towards vehicles that are smaller than those made locally, the strength of the Australian dollar and the unwillingness of government to maintain financial support to the industry were all key contributing factors.
