South Korea is one of the world's most oil-intensive industrialised countries. It is the world's tenth-largest energy consumer and depends on imports for about 97% of its energy demand. South Korea is increasingly looking abroad for opportunities to develop resources.
Energy consumption grew by an estimated 1.3% in 2013, to 268.1m tonnes oil equivalent (toe). The Economist Intelligence Unit expects energy consumption to grow by 2.2% a year in 2014-20, reflecting increased car ownership, growth in heavy industry and the energy inefficiency of much of South Korea's manufacturing sector.
