摘要
Although Indonesia is South-east Asia's largest economy, it is also one of the poorest countries in the region, with low levels of income. The quality of healthcare is generally low.
The country spends less on healthcare than its neighbours: The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates Indonesia's healthcare expenditure in 2014 at the equivalent of3% of GDP, compared with 3.9% in Thailand and 4.7% in the Philippines.
Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN), a healthcare system that aims to provide universal health insurance by 2019, was implemented in January 2014. The president, Joko Widodo (known locally as Jokowi), implemented a similar scheme in Jakarta, the capital, when he was governor and is supportive of the reforms. However, funding constraints suggest that the rollout will be gradual.
