摘要
Mexico's automotive industry is one of the most important and dynamic areas of the domestic economy. In 2013 it accounted for 20.3% of total export sales and 16.8% of manufacturing GDP. The industry employed almost 570,000 people (640,500 including the auto parts segment) at end-2013,17.3% of all manufacturing employment. The industry received US$3.2bn of foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2013, up by 19.5% from 2012.
In contrast to Brazil, where most production is geared towards the domestic market, the bulk of cars produced in Mexico are intended for export. The country's car exports are more than five times higher than those of Brazil. Mexico is the fourth-largest vehicle exporter in the world (behind Germany, Japan and South Korea) and the eighth-largest producer.
Annual vehicle sales reached an estimated 1.2m in 2014, representing growth of 5.9% compared with 2013. Nevertheless, sales are still short of their 2006-07 peaks of around 1.5m units, owing to the sharp contraction in 2007-09 caused by the global recession, and so there is considerable scope for further growth.
