Peru's overall energy consumption totalled an estimated 23,500 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent (ktoe) in 2014, a 4% year-on-year increase. Strong economic growth, an expansion of energy-intense industries (mainly mining), increasing urbanisation and rising incomes will boost demand for energy in 2015-20. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts energy consumption to total 28405 ktoe by 2020.
We expect Peru's extensive untapped energy potential in both gas and petroleum to be explored more aggressively over the forecast period (2015-20) as the government seeks foreign investment to fuel continued growth.
We forecast that Peru's electricity generating capacity will rise sharply (by more than 20%) by 2020, driven by investments in natural gas and renewables plants. The government estimates that one-third of total capacity will be destined for reserves or exports to neighbouring countries, in particular Brazil.
