Healthcare spending in local-currency terms has grown steadily, and is expected to rise by an annual average rate of 8.1% in 2014-18 (and by 8 % in US dollar terms), reflecting its growing share of GDP. Spending growth has historically trailed that of other regional markets such as Brazil, although an improved economic outlook in the medium term will keep growth robust.
Total expenditure on healthcare was equal to an estimated 6.8% of GDP in 2013, which is low, both by OECD standards and compared with Brazil. The rate is expected to rise gradually over the forecast period, to 7% of GDP in 2017-18, but could increase further if the recent fiscal reform raises enough revenue.
