摘要
The medium- and longer-term outlook for Turkey's retail sector remains broadly positive, given projected growth in incomes and demographic trends. The total population is expected to rise from an estimated 76m in 2014, with a low average age of 29, to 79.1m in 2019.
A steep rise in interest rates by the Central Bank of Turkey at the start of 2014 was partly reversed in May-July. Rates will remain high and, coupled with restrictions on consumer lending since January 2014, will curb consumer demand, which has grown strongly in recent years. lira weakness may also dampen demand for imported goods.
Turkey is a religiously conservative country, but there is a significant and growing market for Western patterns of consumption. This is particularly true of the country's fast-growing major cities, mainly in wealthier western areas. Rising incomes will drive demand for luxury items and innovative technology devices like tablets and smartphones.
