摘要
Personal disposable income per head will reach US$3,430 a year by 2018, up from US$2,320 in 2013, but the Philippines will remain one of South-east Asia's poorer countries, with disposable income per head below that of Singapore (US$31,740 in 2018), Malaysia (US$9,090), Thailand (US$5,230) and Indonesia (US$3,380).
In local-currency terms, personal disposable income in the Philippines will grow strongly in 2014-18, rising by an average of 10.4% a year, up slightly from 8.9% annually in 2009-13. In volume terms The Economist Intelligence Unit expects retail sales to expand by 5.2% a year in the forecast period.
Remittances from overseas Filipino workers are a major driver of consumer spending. These payments were largely insulated from the impact of the 2008-09 global economic crisis and have helped to underpin spending. We expect that remittances will continue to grow in the next five years. Returning migrant workers may also influence a shift in tastes towards foreign products and brands.
