The Vietnamese financial services industry has grown rapidly in recent years. At the equivalent of an estimated 405% of GDP in 2013, Vietnam's financial asset base is smaller relative to the size of its economy than those of Malaysia (468%) and China (631%), but larger than those of Thailand (363%), the Philippines (315%) and Indonesia (110%).
During the early part of the forecast period the government will continue to find it hard to achieve a policy balance. On the one hand, it is keen to keep policy relatively loose in order to avoid starving firms of working capital and stifling economic activity. On the other hand, tighter monetary policy would help to support the exchange rate and reduce inflationary pressures.
