The mobile-phone market is expected to see continued growth in the forecast period, but The Economist Intelligence Unit expects growth to slow down markedly from the high rates of uptake over the past decade. Having risen by an average of 3.7% per year in 2008-13, we expect the number of mobile-phone subscriptions to slow to growth of just 0.2% on average per year in 2014-18.
We forecast that the number of mobile subscriptions per 100 people in Portugal will rise from an estimated 168 in 2013 to 170 in 2018, equivalent to around 17.8m contracts.
The high penetration rate (above 100%) reflects people holding multiple subscriptions for personal and corporate use or for data access only, as well as an increasing number of subscriptions tied to automated machines and equipment (such as alarm systems or payment terminals). According to data from Autoridade National de Comunicacoes (Anacom, the regulator), only around 80% of subscriptions are active at any time.
