The number of mobile-phone subscriptions has increased rapidly over the past decade, rising from 7.9m in 2004 to a forecast 14.1m in 2014, equivalent to a penetration rate of over 160%, and is expected to rise further over the forecast period, climbing above 175% by 2018.
However, mobile telecommunications revenue fell by over 5% in 2013, according to data from the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR), amid declines in overall call minutes and text messages sent. This was a continuation of a trend seen since 2007 when flat rates were introduced in the Austrian mobile-phone sector.
