摘要

Retail sales in France reached an estimated €38obn (US$504bn) in 2013-equivalent to around one-third of total private consumption and just under 20% of GDP.
The outlook is for feirly weak growth in consumer spending, particularly during the first half of the forecast period, when private consumption growth (and retail sales) will be constrained by a sluggish recovery characterised by high unemployment, modest wage growth and a heavy tax burden.
Despite an easing of the euro zone crisis, the French economy has yet to move into a solid recovery phase. Financial volatility has dropped sharply, but French results in the European Parliament elections in May 2014 were symptomatic of increasing levels of political risk in much of the euro zone. If the crisis intensifies again, households may rein in spending sharply.
