Russia is one of the world's leading energy producers. It was among the largest oil producers globally in 2013, and was the second-largest natural-gas producer in that year as well (the shale gas boom in the US having allowed that country to take the lead). Russia is also one of the biggest coal producers in the world.
Oil-production growth has slowed since peaking in the 1990s, but output reached a post-Soviet high of 10.8m barrels/day (b/d) in 2013. There is, however, little prospect that the heady growth rates of the early 2000s will return. International sanctions will reduce investment and could lead to a fall in total output if prolonged.
