The hydrocarbons sector provides the vast bulk of Iranian energy and electricity. Iran holds the world's second-largest natural gas reserves (17% of total world reserves) and the fourth-largest proven crude oil reserves (around 10% of total), according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
International sanctions on Iran's energy and financial sectors have slashed oil production. Iran is no longer OPEC's second-largest producer, and the country will continue to produce at relatively low levels unless there is a deal to roll back sanctions (or if the sanctions regime frays). The prospect of such a deal hangs in the balance, but it is possible in 2014-15.
