摘要
Canada is the fifth-largest producer of energy in the world after the US, China, Russia and Saudi Arabia. Mining, quarrying, and extraction of oil and gas accounted for 8.2% of GDP at end-2013, and the resource base is both large and diverse. These activities employed 382,700 people, or around 2% of the labour force in December 2014.
Canada relies less than the US on combustible fuels for its electricity. Combustible fuels were estimated to account for around one-quarter of electricity generation in 2014, whereas hydroelectric sources were estimated to account for more than half of electricity generation.
The Canadian economy is highly energy-intensive owing to the rigours of the climate; the prevalence of heavy industry, such as aluminium; the huge amounts of energy required by the growing oil sands industry; and the size of its natural resources sector generally.
