Total healthcare expenditure is estimated at 11% of GDP in 2013, the level that it has fluctuated around since the recession in 2009. The pre-recession trend was upwards, from 8.8% of GDP in 2000.
The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that healthcare's share of the economy will rise slightly, to 11.3%, by the end of the forecast period, despite cost-consciousness on the part of consumers and government measures to control costs in order to improve fiscal sustainability.
