Increased competition has pushed down telecommunications tariffs in recent years. Overall prices for all types of telecoms fell by 7.7% in 2012 and by 3.8% in 2013, according to figures from the State Statistics Committee (SSC).
Demand for mobile-phone services has grown strongly, owing to the poor quality of the fixed-line network and the needs of the oil industry and related sectors. In 2013 there were an estimated 110.3 mobile phone subscriptions per 100 people, although user penetration is lower.
