The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates that Taiwan had 31.9m mobile-phone subscribers in 2013, representing an estimated mobile penetration rate of nearly 137%. The rate is forecast to reach almost 160% by 2018.
The number of 3G mobile-phone subscriptions stood at 24.8m at end-2013, according to the National Communications Commission (NCC, the sector's regulator). The 3G mobile-phone subscription base has been growing strongly, expanding by an annual average of 17% in 2009-13, as mobile-phone users switch from 2G. According to the NCC, about 18m subscribers had access to mobile broadband in 2013.
