Mobile-phone penetration in Indonesia, at an estimated 140.9% in 2014, is quickly catching up with rates in other countries in South-east Asia. The number of mobile-phone subscriptions will grow by an estimated 10.1% in 2014, supported by declining call charges and cheaper handsets. The Economist Intelligence Unit forecasts that growth in 2014-18 will slow to an average of 6% a year, from 19.2% in 2009-13, as the market matures.
Greater affordability, service improvements, a stable political environment and forecast rapid economic expansion are the main factors behind our expectation of average annual growth of 7.5% in mobile telecommunications revenue in the next five years, in local-currency terms.
