摘要
Despite its small size relative to its neighbours, Ecuador has abundant sources of both hydrocarbon and hydroelectric energy. Petroleum products are the dominant source of energy, supplying about 85% of the country's total energy consumption. Hydroelectricity contributes the next largest share (around 7%). Ecuador had just over 8bn barrels of oil reserves in 2013, the third largest in South America after Venezuela and Brazil.
With estimated gross domestic energy consumption per head of only 1.03 tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in 2014, Ecuador is a small energy consumer per head of population. The country's energy demand makes up less than 1% of Latin America's total primary energy consumption.
In 2015-20 electricity consumption will grow at an average of 54% a year, supported by moderate economic growth. Annual energy consumption will rise from 16.6m tonnes oil equivalent in 2015 to 20.9m tonnes oil equivalent in 2020. Wide income inequalities will limit fester rates of demand growth.
