Greater affordability, service improvements, a stable political environment and forecast rapid economic expansion are the main factors behind our expectation of average annual growth of 5.1% in mobile telecommunications revenue in the next five years, in local-currency terms. 3G mobile services were launched in the mid-2ooos, and increasing numbers of smartphone users are putting pressure on networks. A 2014 Nielsen survey puts smartphone penetration in urban Indonesia at 23%. Given the availability of cheap smartphones, we expect this segment of the market to record strong growth in the forecast period.
Congestion on the 3G network has led some operators, including Indosat (which is owned by Qatar's Ooredoo), to exploit their networks of wireless fidelity (WiH) hotspots to carry a portion of their 3G traffic.
