摘要
India has the third-largest retail market in Asia, after China and Japan. Following a slowdown in 2012-13, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects retail sales growth to rebound in 2014 in response to stronger economic growth and improved consumer confidence. Growth will remain solid in 2015-19, with the level of sales almost doubling to US$1.85trn by 2019. The retail sector is undergoing a structural shift from small, family-run shops to larger, organised retail outlets.
Although India has the potential to be foreign retailers' next big frontier, with organised retailers accounting for less than 10% of the country's US$931bn retail market, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government's closed-door policy towards foreign-owned multi-brand retailers is a setback.
India's youthful population is becoming more brand- and fashion-conscious, especially in the big cities, where increasingly affluent households are acquiring a taste for luxury items. Many global brands are targeting this market segment.
