The mobile-phone penetration rate in South Korea exceeds 100% and is likely to continue to rise steadily in 2015-19. According to the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP), mobile-phone contracts numbered 56.8m at end-October 2014-a greater number than the country's total population, which is estimated at 504m.
Telecommunications consumer spending will be driven by demand for mobile data services amid strong demand for smartphones and other mobile Internet-enabled devices. South Korean smartphone market development has been led by premium smartphones, which helped Samsung Electronics to become the world's biggest smartphone supplier.
However, the global shift towards cheaper smartphones has begun to catch on in Samsung's home market. Lower-end devices made by Chinese competitors are becoming increasingly popular in South Korea.
