摘要
In the five years to fiscal year 2011/12 (April-March), India's domestic passenger-car sales nearly doubled, making its car market the seventh-largest in the world. However, annual sales growth slowed to just 1.3% in 2012/13 and fell by 6.1% in 2013/14 to 2.5m units.
In 2014/15 car sales grew modestly during the first five months (by 5.2% year on year) before felling back in September and October. The fell in oil prices helped the market to rebound in November, with sales up by 10% year on year. The Economist Intelligence Unit expects car sales to grow by 4% for the full fiscal year. However, sales growth over the next five years is unlikely to return to double digits; we expect growth of 7.8% on average.
India is the world's sixth-largest producer of vehicles, but its automotive industry has been in low gear since 2012. Slowing GDP growth, rising interest rates, sharply higher imported petrol prices (owing to substantial depreciation of the rupee) and labour disputes have taken their toll on the sector. But the industry is hoping that the government will revive its fortunes.
