摘要
The automotive industry is a flagship sector and a large source of export earnings, as about 60% of vehicles produced in Italy are exported, compared with around 50% a decade ago. Vehicle production has been in decline, mainly owing to a huge fell in the number of passenger cars produced in Italy.
Fiat (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) is the only large manufacturer in Italy. In January 2014 Fiat completed its takeover of Chrysler, a US manufacturer. In October 2014 the merger of the two brands was completed under the new company name, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA).
A pick-up in European vehicle sales following a prolonged slump triggered by the 2008-09 global crisis has helped to ease some of the difficulties feeing vehicle manufacturers in Italy. But the sector still face challenges owing to production overcapacity, weak competitiveness and intense competition from low-cost countries, especially those in central and eastern Europe.
