摘要
The UK telecommunications market is fiercely competitive and highly saturated. The mobile-phone penetration rate was an estimated 147% in 2014, limiting the scope for revenue growth to pricier data services, and for hardware sales growth to handset upgrades and replacements. The UK was one of the first countries to auction frequencies for third-generation (3G) mobile services in 2000. It was slower with fourth-generation (4© services, launching a restricted offering in 2012 and commencing a full rollout in 2013 after the conclusion of the 4G auction.
Mobile telecoms account for the majority of telecoms connections in the UK-The Economist Intelligence Unit estimates there were just under 94m mobile subscriptions in 2014, among a population of 64m. We forecast annual average growth in mobile subscriptions of around 3% in 2015-19. According to Ofcom, the market regulator, 93% of UK adults used a mobile phone in 2014.
At the end of 2014, EE was the largest of the UK's four main mobile operators, with around 32% of subscribers, followed by O2 (29%), Vodafone (24%) and Three (12%).
