摘要
Retail sales will grow at rates of between 3.6% and 4.5% in 2015-19 in real terms, lower than in the past, owing to weaker GDP growth. Household consumption will still be supported by job and income gains, but these have weakened, and credit expansion will also play a more limited role, as households have become more indebted following a consumer credit binge.
A reduction in poverty has increased the lower-middle-income class, adding to the number of consumers with greater disposable income. By 2019 we expect over 42.7m households (out of a total of 62.9m) to be earning over US$10,000 per year. Of these, 54m households will be earning over US$50,000 per year, mainly in the wealthier south-eastern and southern states.
Total expenditure on food, beverages and tobacco will reach US$352bn by 2019, but, at 23.1% of household spending, this is a low proportion by the standards of most developing countries.
