Chile has one of Latin America's most advanced telecommunications and information technology (IT) markets, helped by a regulatory system that seeks to promote competition. Given Chile's firm economic growth rates and rising incomes, The Economist Intelligence Unit expects total IT spending in Chile to expand from US$7.5bn in 2013 to US$10.2bn in 2018. In local currency terms, this represents an annual average growth rate of 10.1% in the 2014-18 period.
Chile has the second-highest rate, after Argentina, for mobile penetration among the eight countries in Latin America covered in our industry forecasts. Mobile penetration stood at around 144 subscriptions per 100 people as of end-2013, increasing from almost 139 per 100 from a year earlier, according to our estimates. The total mobile subscriber base was 25.3m at end-2013, up 5% from a year earlier and up more than 27.6% from 2010. Growth is forecast to average 2.5% per year in 2014-18, with the subscriber base set to reach 28.7m (156.2 per 100 people) by 2018 as more people take out multiple subscriptions for home and work.
