Slovakia has developed a well regulated and well run financial system. The National Bank of Slovakia (NBS, the central bank) is the sole regulator of the sector, although the European Central Bank (ECB) will acquire a supervisory role from November 2014 as a result of the EU's banking union. Slovakia uses the euro, so the ECB also controls monetary policy.
Employee contributions to the second, private, pillar of the pensions system were cut in 2012 but are due to rise again from 2017. Assets managed by pension funds are increasing steadily, and the funds appear set to become important financial players by the end of the forecast period.
