Romania has significant primary energy resources and is an important regional producer of oil, natural gas and electricity, with pretensions to become a key regional power market. It currently relies on imports to meet local demand for oil, natural gas and coal.
The potential of the energy sector, worth an estimated €30bn (US$38bn, or 22.5% of nominal GDP) in 2012 based on sales of the 20 largest energy companies, will continue to be stymied over the medium term by the failure of successive governments to implement a clear and consistent strategy, and by a paucity of investment to upgrade the outdated industry infrastructure.
